CADIA PORPHYRY Au-Cu DISTRICT

A group of porphyry-style deposits near the old Cadia mineral district has been found by Newcrest Mining Ltd since 1992 and includes Cadia Quarry, Cadia Hill, Cadia Ridgeway, Cadia East and Cadia Far East. The deposits are located approximately 20 km south of the town of Orange in central New South Wales, Australia at lat. 33-28'S, long. 149-00E. Host is a Late Ordovician to Early Silurian porphyry alteration-mineralisation system which extends over an area of at least 6 x 2 km within the Ordovician Molong Volcanic Belt of the Palaeozoic Lachlan Fold Belt. The MVB comprises a suite of intermediate-to-basic volcanics, volcaniclastics, co-magmatic intrusions, and limestones. Mineralisation styles include sheeted quartz vein, stockwork quartz vein, disseminated and skarn, all of which are genetically related to a relatively small (in outcrop) composite intrusion of predominantly monzonitic composition, with a monzonitic to dioritic rind. As of 2001 mining had proceeded on deposits at Cadia Hill and Cadia Ridgeway. Total Cadia district resources are estimated (2001) by Newcrest Mining Limited to be 18.7 m oz Au, 2.45 mt Cu.

Annotation:Cadia district regional aeromagnetic setting. Modern era exploration was stimulated in particular by recognition of magnetic features which could be interpreted as westward extensions or repetitions of a magnetic anomaly over the magnetic skarn at Big Cadia. Red colours indicate high response and blue colours low response.
