AROONA (& Beltana) Zn DEPOSIT

The Beltana deposit is located at lat. 30º41', long. 138º27', 470 km north of Adelaide in host rocks of the Adelaidean Geosyncline, a deformed sedimentary basin of Late Proterozoic to Middle Cambrian age. The Aroona deposit lies11 km NW of Beltana. Both are epigenetic structurally controlled willemite (Zn silicate) deposits within a major NW-trending corridor of Zn-Pb mineralisation. The principal ore mineral is willemite, which is surrounded by an intense hematite-dolomite alteration halo. Other major ore minerals include smithsonite, coronadite, hedyphane and mimetite. The intense alteration halo is zinc-enriched (1-3% Zn) and extends up to 400 m around Beltana, with dolomite alteration detectable for several kilometres. At Aroona, hematite alteration is more restricted. Similar deposits elsewhere include Vazante in Brazil and Kabwe in Zambia. The pre-mining resource at Beltana is estimated to be (Perilya 2001) 863,000 t @ 38% Zn & 2.2% Pb, and at Aroona 150,000 t @ 34.4% Zn & 1.6% Pb.
