BATU HIJAU COPPER-GOLD DEPOSIT

The Batu Hijau porphyry copper-gold orebody is located at long. 116º49', lat. 9º00'S on the island of Sumbawa in the Sunda-Banda Arc, Indonesia. Mineralisation occurs in the central stock of a tonalite intrusive complex, and in diorite and volcanic wallrocks. The central stock has associated intense pervasive potassic alteration that contains most of the higher grade mineralisation. This merges outwards into an extensive propylitic zone. Both of these zones are over-printed by widespread intermediate-argillic and minor phyllic and albite alteration. Argillic and advanced-argillic assemblages occur near surface. Copper and gold are largely hosted by quartz stockworks, but also as disseminations. Chalcopyrite and bornite are the main ore minerals. Current pit reserves as of December 2002 were 920 mt @ 0.55% Cu, 0.42 g/t Au. The property is owned by Newmont Indonesia Ltd.

Annotation: Simplified metal zoning patterns of the Batu Hijau area, showing central Cu (chalcocite, bornite & chalcopyrite) & Au (native gold), proximal Mo (molybdenite), & peripheral Zn (sphalerite) anomalies in bedrock & soil. Gold occurs in copper-sulphides in the deposit core & within structurally-controlled pyritic "D" veins & quartz veins that extend through the deposit. Arsenic (tennantite) in these late veins forms linear anomalies outboard of gold.

Annotation: Simplified geophysical characteristic of the Batu Hijau area, showing the outlines of magnetite, radiometric and induced polarisation-chargeability anomalies. Batu Hijau is characterised by coincident magnetic and chargeability highs that lie within a corridor of anomalous radiometric potassium.

Annotation: Soil geochemistry: gold ppb. Gold and copper distribution in soil is highly anomalous over Bat Hijau. A >100 ppb Au anomaly is coincident with tonalite outcrop and altered wall rocks. A >600 ppm copper anomaly is also coincident with the deposit outcrop and leached secondary copper occurs in drainage to the north. Molybdenum forms a broad halo around the deposit.

Annotation: Ground magnetics: total field data reduced to the pole. A circular magnetic high centred over the deposit correlates well with surface projection of the 0.5% Cu contour of the deposit. Secondary magnetite, associated with the potassic alteration of the intrusives and the propylitic alteration of the wall rocks, produces a distinctive high in aeromagnetic and ground magnetic data.

Annotation: IP gradient array: chargeability. This clearly defines the gross mineral system and outlines economic mineralisation. The 60 ms chargeability contour maps the surface projection of 0.5% Cu from the 300 m level. Also, a well-defined chargeability annulus 600 m from the centre of the deposit and 200 m in width encircles the core anomaly, believed to represent the higher pyritic outer alteration halo.

Annotation: IP gradient array: resistivity. Well defined conductive zones correlate with the argillic alteration zone. Interpretation of the dipole-dipole data also clearly outlines the mineralised core and the argillic alteration zone.
