ROSIA MONTANA GOLD DEPOSITS

The Rosia Montana epithermal low sulphidation gold deposits are centred at long. 23º08'E, lat. 46º18'N, 85 km NE of Deva in the Transylvania region of Romania. This area has been the most important gold producing province in Europe for over 2,000 years. Gold occurs in two, late Tertiary, mineralised and hydrothermally altered sub-volcanic porphyritic dacites, intruded into sediments and spreading laterally along at least one stratigraphic boundary. Sub-vertical breccia pipes (diatremes?) and a unit of volcaniclastic sediments are spatially associated with the intrusives and are mineralised. Gold occurs as electrum associated with sulphides (mainly pyrite) and in its native form. The total measured, indicated & inferred resource at February 2001 was 127 Mt @ 2.1 g/t Au and 9 g/t Ag, amounting to 8.5 Moz Au and 34.8 Moz Ag.
